UK Sea Areas Map

I am currently working on a UK sea areas map. Inspiration for it is the BBC Radio4 shipping forecast. Named areas are Viking / North Utsire / South Utsire / Forties / Cromarty / Forth / Tyne / Dogger / Fisher / German Bight / Humber / Thames / Dover / Wight / Portland / Plymouth / Biscay / Trafalgar / FitzRoy / Sole / Lundy / Fastnet / Irish Sea / Shannon / Rockall / Malin / Hebrides / Bailey / Fair Isle / Faeroes / Southeast Iceland

Peter Jefferson's 'And now the shipping forecast' covers the subject from all angles. I also stumbled across this live ships map which tracks position of ships around the world.

Any feedback, (especially from mariners off UK's shores) is much appreciated.

Crystal Palace FC Scarf - screen print

the screen

on the drying rack
detail

I'm not much of a football fan but I admire my boyfriend's old Crystal Palace scarf. He wears it in one of his childhood photos. I love the old logo (1994 - 2013); with the not so agile looking eagle and face-on graphic image of the original glass palace. The resulting screen print is a limited edition of 95. Prints can be purchased on seagullhut.com for £85.

The Name of the Rose - book cover design

I've always wanted to design covers for my favourite books. To start I chose Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose. Lettering is inspired by medieval black letter and floral ornaments (interwoven rose stems with thorns) since the story is set in1327. For texture and colour I tried out different worn textile covers, leather and gold leaf (a bit OTT I know..). More about the book.

Looking Down

from Heloise's photo blog

The canvas under our feet is subject of Héloise Acher's expanding photo blog called regard/discard. Her photographs frame street surfaces as constantly evolving piece of accidental art. They portray the street; its harsh textures, cracks and blemishes. The close-ups also show the street as a display for apparently worthless, lost, used-up, discarded objects. Compositions of these elements which could be summarised as mainly junk, allude to countless untold urban stories.
The scattered, trampled-on, damaged objects and surfaces are in juxtaposition with the careful way they have been photographed, creating an unsettling aesthetic quality.
Héloise walks and takes pictures on London's and Paris' streets. regard/discard is part of the B-sights project. Visit the blog.

Allen Keys Alphabet

Today I rumaged through the toolbox (in my newly converted, painted-white, storage-walled workshop/studio). Contents include screws, drill bits, nails, rings, plugs, hooks in many shapes and sizes. After some experimenting I settled on trying to assemble an alphabet with the allen keys, which I seem to have in abundance and in various sizes. As you might suspect I've been to Ikea few times in the past years. Here's some evidence of an afternoon's assembling and re-assembling of allen key - letter shapes.

Free download of AllenKeys-beta is now available on dafont.

SOLD at the showdown

Showdown evening 31st May '13, Anne and Russel sitting in front of the entrance before handing out flyers.

Above are a few photos of our recent show at my local deli; Deli X, Deptford high street. On display (extended until 15th June) are recent photo collages by b-sights.co.uk, Seagull&Sword and some of my typographic map prints.

Delicious Deptford Market inspired bites were served at the showdown by Sonia and the team at Deli X. It included spring-rolls, mini-toads in the hole, and spicy mini portions of Jamaican ackee and saltfish - which were just as well received by the guests as the art on the walls. Thank you to everyone who has helped making the event happen, to those who helped out on the night and to all the guests for turning up :)

If you haven't got the chance to go and see the show, view our prints and collages at b-sights.co.uk and ursulahitz.com
